Bangalore: Car- and twowheeler users caught in traffic snarls can heave a sigh of relief. Reason? More Volvo city buses are on their way.

Having been well-received, these 25 low-floor, air-conditioned luxury red buses sporting attractive graphics will soon be increased to 50.

Introduced by BMTC in January to offer a luxury alternative to users of four- and two-wheelers accustomed to comfortable journeys, Volvos became an instant hit with the software professionals when introduced on Electronic City and Whitefield routes.

BMTC sources told Vijay Times on Wednesday that with the transport corporation approving the order for more buses in its board meeting, the second batch of buses will be procured at a cost of Rs 18.62 crore and delivered by Sweden-headquartered company by this November.

Meanwhile, sources said a proposal to introduce a Gold Pass exclusively for Volvo commuters at a cost Rs 1,300 has been temporarily put on hold. The pass offered an accident insurance coverage of Rs 3 lakh.

"We will introduce the Gold Pass once more Volvos hit the road. At present, we have not been able to break even with Volvo buses due to the high operational costs. Our motto is to provide world-class public transport in the City and convince those commuting in the private vehicles to switch over to public transport. BMTC will introduce the Volvo-specific pass later this year," officials said.
