BANGALORE: ‘Introduction of flexible working hours in the City would be one of the measures to reduce the pollution,’ said environment scientist C Rajashekara Murthy on Saturday.
Speaking on ‘Bangalore urban pollution control’ organised by the Indian Institute of Engineers, he said introduction of flexible working hours would reduce traffic congestion.
“When there is a traffic congestion the vehicular movement will be slow thus contributing to more pollution.”
“But of late it is not only at the peak hours but even at regular hours the traffic is more because the city is growing beyond its capacity,” he said.
Therefore, there is a need to address the traffic problem seriously.
“If we keep on adding more vehicles on the road then there might be serious problem in years to come besides causing pollution related disorders,” he added.
He pointed out that another contributing factor for rise in the pollution is the poor maintenance of the vehicles. Effective emission monitory could bring the pollution under check.
He suggested that auto rickshaws should be limited only to suburban zone.
“This system is opted in Mumbai and has been successful. The same can be done in Bangalore also. But, it is important to see that the system has to be implemented in such a way that it should not deprive the livelihood of the auto drivers.”
