Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will take up the improvement of living conditions in 169 slums in the City as part of Sub Mission II of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The Mission is aimed at providing basic services to the urban poor and the BMP is ready with a Rs 1,083.90 crore plan on slums.

All the slums chosen for the project are learnt to be undeclared slums.

“Since the notified slums are as it is developed by the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board, we have chosen the undeclared slums”, sources explained.

As many as 80,000 households tallying to a population of 5,81,268 make the 169 slums as they stand today, sources said.

Their distribution across the three divisions of the BMP is as follows: 65 each in the East and South divisions and 39 in the West division.

Housing, roads, street lights, water supply, sanitary lines, community toilets, community centres, storm water drains etc are the aspects that the project will address.

The breakup of the total cost (Rs 1,083.90 crore) of the project is as follows: Rs 722.60 crore for housing; Rs 361.30 for other infrastructure.

Workshop today

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Urban Development has organised a workshop on JN-NURM for senior officers of Karnataka and Kerala in Bangalore on Tuesday. “The workshop is meant to assess and get the feedback on our readiness for utilising JN-NURM benefits”, said a senior officer of BMP. BMTC, BWSSB, BDA too are expected to be part of the workshop. The BMTC is armed with Rs 3,000 crore infrastructure development plan to be taken up under JN-NURM.
