A corridor to smooth away motoring blues

The number of motor vehicles registered in Bangalore has increased from 2.36 lakh in 1983 to 21 lakh in December 2004, resulting in most of the corridors carrying traffic volumes much above their capacity.

Bangalore, ov-er the years, has grown into a radial City with nine road corridors forming the principal radial arms with concentric orbital corridors. The total road length of the city is about 4,200 km, of which arterial roads account for 500 km.

The number of motor vehicles registered in Bangalore has increased from 2.36 lakh in 1983 to 21 lakh in December 2004, resulting in most of the corridors carrying traffic volumes much above their capacity.

South Bangalore is no exception to this trend. Now, BMP’s North-South Corridor Project makes tall promises to reduce traffic congestion and ensure smooth transportation management.

The Project, proposed to be implemented in four phases, includes widening of existing roads and construction of grade separators. BMP has identified 16 junctions and circles which are eligible for a grade separator, including five that are already under process.

However, many of the projects are yet to receive administrative approval by the State Government. Deadlines have not been fixed and there is no clear picture on the total funds that would be required. There is also a question whether the construction of grade separators and flyovers just shifts the problem by triggering congestion at adjacent junctions.

Deccan Herald takes a peek at the North-South Corridor blue print and related issues.
