The residents aired their grievances at a police-public interaction programme.

Security, especially during night, is what the residents of newly developing areas of in J P Nagar are worried about. They want the police to intensify night patrolling. They said they are willing to work with the police.

The residents of 25 newly developed layouts have now formed an association - the RBI Residents’ Welfare Association - to demand their dues from the government. The layouts, spread over Puttenahalli, JP Nagar 6th, 7th and 8th phases, are under the jurisdiction of Bommanahalli City Municipal Council. The parental association has members from all the 25 newly developed layouts.

The members chose Sunday morning to draw the attention of Alok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Zone, about their problems and fears. During the three-hour interaction, the members of the Association said dacoity and theft cases in their areas had increased in the last one year. They said many multi-storeyed buildings including housing complexes were being constructed in the new layouts.

‘Keep eye on strangers’

The police should keep vigil on construction workers, who are invading the area, from outside Karnataka, said Mr Hameed, a retired official of Canara Bank.

He said: “We are seeing lot of strangers these days in our layouts. Cases of chain snatching and stopping of two-wheelers and robbing them have become common. There are many isolated houses. Night beat police are not to be seen since a few months. Night patrolling should be intensified and the residents are ready act as civilian policemen”.

Mr Chandrashekhar Gowda, the area councillor who was also present, narrated an incident wherein his friend was assaulted and robbed of Rs one lakh two days ago. “Soon after the incident, I went to the spot. I could see two night beat policemen peacefully sleeping close to the place where the incident took place”, he observed.

However, the Police Inspector Venkata Swamy, who was there, countered him saying that the victim was suffering from brain haemorrhage and was not in a position to give the first hand account of the incident.

DCP speaks

In his reply, Police officer Alok Kumar conceded the suggestion of the residents that they should be allowed to function as civilian policemen for night patrolling. He also asked the members to increase their interaction with their neighbours and help in keeping a check over strangers arriving in their areas.
