BANGALORE: With the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) finding success in urban management through private-public partnerships, the civic body proposes to take up more joint venture projects, the BMP Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam, said here on Saturday.

Delivering an address on "Public-Private Partnership in Bangalore Urban Management" organised by the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Karnataka regional branch here, Mr. Jothiramalingam said such collaboration especially with resident welfare associations and corporate organisations could go a long way in improving quality of civic amenities and infrastructure and also increasing transparency.

He said the BMP had decided to build all commercial complexes on a public-private partnership basis. It had identified nine places in the city for multi-level parking and commercial complexes through collaboration with private agencies. A modern slaughterhouse on Hosur Road was also proposed through a joint venture, he said.

The civic body had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Public Affairs Centre, a voluntary organisation, to initiate rainwater-harvesting projects in schools and hospitals.

Giving an example of how partnership projects could be profitable to the BMP if managed properly, Mr. Jothiramalingam said the BMP had entered into a joint venture with a private agency for multi-level car parking at the Garuda Mall on Magrath Road on a sharing basis. It has space for parking around 900 cars. The BMP had got Rs. 93 lakhs as revenue from this venture from the time the complex was opened in April.
