Citizens’ misery continued as heavy rain flooded several areas and uprooted many trees in various parts of the City.
The torrential rain that struck again on Tuesday evening took another life in Bangalore City. A parking-lot attendant died on-the-spot near the Victoria Statue at Cubbon Park due to electrocution.
The deceased has been identified as Shafi (45). The victim, who was returning after the day’s work at Bal Bhavan, while attempting to cross a puddle tried to hold the entrance gate (iron gate) of the Bhavan and was electrocuted. He was a resident of Neelasandra. According to police, short circuit could have occurred from a junction box attached to the gate (to supply power to a light above the gate) following heavy rain. The wire in the junction box was not properly covered resulting in short circuit.
Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) Engineer S B Doddaiah, who immediately reached the spot, said the power line is maintained by the Horticulture department and not Bescom. “Bescom only provides power to the Horticulture Department and the system is being maintained by the Department itself,” he added. Horticulture Department officials were not available for comments.
Meanwhile, heavy rain, recorded at 59.2 mm by the Met Department, flooded several areas and uprooted trees in various parts of the City. Anxious citizens called up this office to complain about inundation of water and water logging in their areas. All of them blamed the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike for not initiating any action.
Ms Sarasaraman, a resident of 17th main, HAL II stage, complained that rain water has flooded many houses due to choking of shoulder drains. The delayed Airport flyover work has resulted in blocking of drains, leading to inundation of water, she added.
Mr Sripad, a resident of Ejipura, Parashivamurthy of Shamanna Gowda Layout in Ulsoor, Lalitha of B T M Layout, Mr Harish of Shantinagar, Kumar of Viveknagar and many others had similar stories. The downpour also hit the evening hour traffic in the central part of the City.
