Environment enthusiasts can now heave a sigh of relief. The widespread destruction of the green cover caused by the heavy downpour recently in the southern part of the City is likely to be set right soon.

For all the elected representatives of the Basavanagudi Assembly constituency, including MLA K Chandrashekar, have resolved to go on a tree planting spree under which they hope to plant an estimated 25,000 saplings across the constituency. The innovative greenery drive will be launched on June 5, on the occasion of the World Environment Day, near Bull Temple Road at 9 am.

Nearly 100 trees were uprooted and branches of over 800 trees were severed due to gusty winds and heavy rains that lashed the City recently. “Bangaloreans are concerned about the diminishing green cover in their areas, especially due to rains. Unless one takes the initiative to protect the greenery, the Garden City will soon become a desert,” Mr Chandrashekar, who is the brainchild of the proposed drive, told Deccan Herald.

Besides, all the residents of this area will be provided with a form, seeking their willingness to plant a sapling in front of their houses. For those interested, saplings will be given free of cost, he said.

Various non-government organisations, resident welfare associations and thousands of students from different schools and colleges in the constituency will be involved in the drive.

Mr Chandrashekar said that an innovative drain water harvesting scheme will be taken up in select places, as part of this drive. Water harvesting points will be identified inside storm water drains and a system will be designed in such a way that water percolates to the earth, he explained.
