A dark weekend likely for many

A dark weekend likely for many

It will be a black anniversary celebration for the coalition. More than half the city was plunged into darkness all Friday evening, and power supply is not likely to be restored in several areas till Saturday evening, Bescom officials said.

Primarily hit were Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Cox Town, Lingarajapuram and Girinagar. As sheets of rain came down upon a bewildered city on Friday, entire power networks were down, thanks to poles crashing by the hundreds. ‘It’s humanly impossible to restore power immediately. Over 130 poles have fallen just in Jayanagar and JP Nagar areas. “We will need time till Saturday or Sunday for repairs”, said Bescom chief engineer Kumaraswamy.

Ironically, the rains snapped power supply just hours after Power and PWD Minister H D Revanna held a review meeting on monsoon preparedness. He met up with senior officials of KPTCL and Bescom to update himself on whether the companies had chalked out plans to deal with power interruptions and crises. He met with officials of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike too, to discuss administrative problems that KPTCL had in laying a 66 KV line near the Rajajinagar entrance.
