BANGALORE: Chief Minister N Dharam Singh has expressed concern over the unprecedented growth of Bangalore City and the problems faced by the Government to provide water to the City.

Answering a question by V Somanna in the Assembly on Tuesday, Singh pointed out that Bangalore was the sixth city in the world where water was pumped from lower elevation to higher to supply drinking water.

“The City is growing and now we are forming Arkavati layout. From where should we bring water? The population of the City is estimated to be 85 lakh and now we are planning to implement Cauvery IVth stage,” Singh said.

The Government has sanctioned Rs 165 crore to BWSSB to provide drinking water to new layouts which have been brought under BCC limits.

BWSSB is also taking up drinking water and sewerage lines in seven CMCs and one TMC around Bangalore and the project is expected to be completed by 2006, he said.

To plan the overall development of the City, there was a need to form Bangalore Metropolitan Authority on the lines of Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad, he added.
