BANGALORE: Chief Minister Dharam Singh has asked for Rs. 6,000 crore from the Centre for nine projects his administration has been pursuing for Bangalore.

The city, he told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday, will have a population of about one crore by 2021 compared to 65 lakh now. The city is a major education and health centre and home to about 500 MNCs and 1,457 IT companies. The city requires huge investments to upgrade infrastructure and meet the rising expectations from people, he said.

The Government has planned a new peripheral ring road connecting all nation highway radials, other road upgradation work, flyover and underpasses, dedicated bus lanes, comprehensive drainage system to prevent frequent flooding, solid waste management, improvement of infrastructure in eight outlying cities, augmentation of water supply and sewerage systems, strengthening of power infrastructure and slum improvement.

These projects, the CM conveyed to the PM through a presentation, required the funding support of Rs. 6,000 crore from the Centre.

The CM said Bangalore was among the top four global technological hubs, citing the UN human development report. The city exported IT/ITES worth Rs. 18,100 crore in the last fiscal, accounting for 35 percent of the country’s IT/ITES exports.

The city is also home to a large number of garment units –– the sector employs three lakh people and accounts for exports of about Rs. 4,000 crore. This rapid growth will exert pressure on infrastructure, the CM said.
