Bangalore: With a view to providing relief to those proceeding towards the central part of the City from the Devaiah park side, the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) has mooted the construction of grade separator at Malleswaram.

The cost is pegged between Rs 10 crore and Rs 12 crore and the deadline for the completion of the project is 12 months from the date of commencement.

Talking to Vijay Times, BCC technical advisor B Jaiprasad said for the first time they were going to incorporate a penalty-cum-bonus clause in the contract.

''That means, the contractor will get a bonus if he completes the project within 12 months or he has to pay a penalty for every day if he delays it. This will help the BCC to know the reasons for delay in completing the project,'' he added.

Malleswaram is very close to the City Railway Station and one has to criss-cross it to reach Yelahanka or Tumkur.

The BCC officials deliberated for long hours whether to construct the grade separator on the Malleswaram side or the Devaiah Park side.
They settled for the second option since they did not want to give too much trouble to the travelling public.

"We are constructing the grade separator from the K C General Hospital side. It will pass through Malleswaram Circle and will end near the Gitanjali theatre, just before the Link Road junction. It is about 300 metres in length and it is one-way, four-lane track.

“To cut costs, we have decided on the grade separator instead of a flyover. This project has been cleared in principle and now we have to call for tenders to choose the civil contractor," he said.

As per the recent survey conducted at the Malleswaram Circle, roughly 7,800 passenger car units (PCUs) pass through this section during peak hours. Buses travel at a speed of 15 to 20 kmph.

BCC assistant engineer M Lokesh said: “After the completion of the grade separator, the traffic would move faster.”
“We will not hamper the movement of traffic at any given time. We will start the work on one portion of the road and allow traffic by building the retaining wall," he said.
