BANGALORE, DEC. 1. The railway engineers deserve praise for completing one of the two spans of the underpass at the Kumarapark-Madhavanagar-Nehrunagar junction in the city.
The old single span bridge, built in 1950, was closed for traffic on August 12. The construction work went apace and one of the two spans of the new underpass came to be opened for traffic on Monday. Vehicles moving from Nehrunagar Circle to N.S. Hardikar Circle have been allowed to pass under the bridge. A passage for pedestrians has been built. The underpass is being built under the old girder bridge.
The Railways will be next taking up the construction of another span of the bridge.
Meanwhile, traffic flowing in the opposition direction (towards Nehrunagar Circle) is being allowed under the temporary bridge.
On its part, the Bangalore Mahanagarapalike will have to widen the approach road to the bridge. Of the three private buildings, which stood in the way of widening, only one has been demolished so far. They have to be acquired and pulled down as otherwise the construction of the wider two span bridge will become pointless. The approach road will remain narrow if the two buildings are retained.
