BANGALORE: Come 2005 and the parched gardens of Cubbon Park will receive a breath of life. Sewage water, after suitable treatment, will be used to irrigate the Cubbon Park landscape.

As part of BDA’s restoration of Cubbon Park, a tertiary water treatment plant and reservoir are under construction in the park premises. The project, which commenced in July, will cost an estimated Rs. 3.70 crore and is expected to be operational by December-end.

For a long time, Cubbon Park’s sole irrigation source has been borewells. In recent years, the number of operational borewells have reduced to just one. By constructing a treatment plant at the park itself, BDA hopes to resolve the water scarcity problem.

The treatment plant can turn an estimated 15 lakh litres of sewage water into usable water for the gardens a day, with the ground level reservoir having a storage capacity of 15 lakh litres.

The treated water will be used not only to irrigate the Cubbon Park landscape but also Vidhana Soudha and the Raj Bhavan gardens.

Talks are on to sell a portion of the treated water to the Karnataka State Cricket Association, said C. Jayaram, deputy conservator of Forest, BDA, adding that the money would go towards maintenance of the treatment plant.

Although construction work has been delayed by a month due to flooding of the area by rains, Jayaram said work is progressing well and will be completed on time.
