Monsoon retreats, BCC gets started

BANGALORE: After a season of widespread criticism and media campaign on potholes and bad roads in the city, the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) swung into action on Wednesday. Asphalting work started on a war footing in Indiranagar.
However, this rainy season will be remembered by the BCC for the ‘holes’ it received in its image. Many felt that the BCC could not rise to the occasion even as Mayor P.R. Ramesh defended its failure as quickly as he had proposed deterrents to official neglect.
On Wednesday, roads in Indiranagar saw hectic repair works with pavement making machines deployed to lay a fresh layer of bitumen on damaged roads.
This interestingly is against what Mayor P.R. Ramesh had been suggesting over the last six months.
He had been saying that mere overlaying of fresh bitumen coats would worsen the pothole problem in coming years, as it does not strengthen the sub grade to take increased vehicular load. He had said that the regular road works must include stripping of the damaged surface and compacting the sub grade before laying the new coat.
Nearly 1,000 kms of city roads will be repaired, relaid and asphalted. The work will conclude by April next.
