BANGALORE: A fatal accident on Tuesday evening resulted in a flare-up as a mob of over 500 pelted stones at buses and blocked traffic for nearly three hours on the outer ring road near Kuvempu Circle. The provocation was a 40 year-old man’s death. He was mowed down by an unidentified vehicle.

Traffic on all major roads in the Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur and Mekhri Circle areas were affected as irate residents prevented the police from shifting the body of the victim, Sheshappa, from the accident spot. Traffic had to be diverted on these roads to prevent a massive pile-up.

Sheshappa, a resident of Lottegollahalli, was knocked down at around 6.30 p.m. Residents gathered in protest and stoned three buses while another group tried to torch a bus. However, this was prevented by the police. Nobody was injured.

Additional forces were rushed to the area, ready to tear-gas the mob. However, the mob, angry that the police could not trace the killer vehicle, refused to budge until the police heard out their problems. They complained that speeding lorries and heavy vehicles were endangering lives on this particular stretch as it did not have speed-breakers.

They also said that street lights often never worked.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control. The body of Sheshappa was taken to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital later and the road cleared for traffic.
