BANGALORE: Even as the pre-monsoon showers have brought down about 20 trees so far, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is yet to complete the pruning of dangerous trees on the roadside.

“Though pruning began last year, it is a slow process and may take another two years to complete,” said Palike Tree Officer Krishna Udupudi.

“It is a tricky situation for the BBMP as cutting the trees will anger environmentalists while unscientific pruning will disturb the equilibrium of the trees and the winds will easily uproot them,” said Udupudi. “However, most of the trees that fell recently were coconut trees which had come onto the pathway, subsequent to acquisition of property for road widening,” he added.

Udupudi said that the Palike had set up three teams having ten members each, which would prune the trees by day and remove the fallen branches at night. He also said that over the next fortnight, the City would witness strong winds.
