A new Bangalore on the lines of New Delhi

A new Bangalore on the lines of New Delhi
Vijay Times

FOUNDER Chairman of PES college M R Doreswamy has been living in this City for the last 55 years. The well-known educationist, who has seen the City grow and develop, took time off a hectic schedule to talk to BVT about Bangalore was half-a-century back and how it is now. He pointed out lapses and came up with suggestions to improve the quality of life in the m e t r o p o l i s. Needless to say, his words were straight from his heart.

There has been a sea of change. The change has been so enormous that it is even difficult to draw a c o m p a r i s o n between the Bangalore that exists now and the Bangalore that existed then.

Bangalore was then the Garden City in the true sense of the term. Now, though it is called the same, the City has lost 50 per cent of the gardens that it once had.

Traffic was manageable even a couple of decades back. Then, it took just 20 minutes for me to travel from Malleshwaram to Basavanagudi. Now, it takes me close to an ho Bangalore is getting more and more polluted everyday. Smoke-emitting vehicles with blaring horns have led to sound and air pollution. Though the civic bodies have been taking steps to increas parks in order to sustain greenery in the City, th efforts being made at present are not enough. The number of parks are not proportional to the increasing levels of pollution and vehicles.

Previously, there were more than 100 lakes in the City. Now, that number has come down because of land encroachment. Also, trees are being cut in th name of widening roads.

However, not everything in Bangalore has deteriorated. The City today has an adequate number of good colleges that provide plenty of opportunities for youngsters. Be it medical, engineering, manage ment, applied sciences or other professional cours es-- every branch has scope here. As an educationist, I see a bright future for education in the Ci Now, several international residential schools have come up in the periphery of the City and this is helping working parents in a big way.

The City has several spiritual and cultural centre that cater to all religions and regions. The relig and linguistic harmony is the biggest strength of City.

All said and done, there is scope for a lot more improvement. We should go for a New Bangalore on the lines of New Delhi, a City with all modern amenities and facilities. New Bangalore must well planned and should have huge parks, wi roads and more libraries.
